On Tuesday, Steven Musil reported with CNET that popular e-Commerce website Amazon.com is tapping into the social scene with Shelfari. Over the years, we have seen a variety of companies bust out their interactive skills, creating a more dynamic environment where visitors can intermingle with one another. With the purchase of social-networking website, Shelfari, Amazon will be doing just that. While nonspecific social networking websites, like Facebook or MySpace, are great for bringing different kinds of people together, niche social networks that focus on one specific area or hobby create a wonderful scene for people with common interests to meet. Shelfari is an example of that; Shelfari is “the premier social network for people who love books.” It’s main feature, as described by the company, is that it “allows users to create virtual bookshelves and share title lists among friends.” Shelfari even has applications for Facebook and MySpace so you can enjoy the perks of the service integrated in your favorite social network. Shelfari posted a press release on the event in its company blog, however did not disclose specific details on the merger. Since Amazon did not officially report on the acquisition, I guess for now this story remains as is- stay tuned for more updates on how these two online services will work together to give you a scholastic shopping experience. |
