Last Friday, the Google Operating System blog posted coverage on a recent update made to the popular e-Commerce application, Google Product Search. Launched initially as Froogle in 2002, Product Search was renamed and revamped in April of 2007. Since then, the application has continued to streamline the process for sellers to list items online (with Google Base) and for shoppers to search around to find the perfect product. So! What’s the new update? Well, it’s not really that new, per-say. The feature focuses on embedded comparative information. The blog post indicated that “sites like Shopzilla, MSN Shopping and Yahoo Shopping already have this feature and are more established destinations for finding products online.” Google is supposed to be top notch technology, but previously, Google Product Search result pages did not directly display comparative prices or specific product details; rather, users had to click on the vendors’ link generated by the search, navigating them away from Google’s familiar interface and secure environment. Now with Google Product Search, certain searches (allegedly electronics for the most part) which yield results from a variety of e-stores will be accompanied with brief descriptions of the products and comparative prices directly on the SERP. With luck, this new update should further simplify the process of shopping with Google Product Search. Are you an avid online shopper or a merchant looking to list your products for easy index? Consider reading up on Google Base and Google Product Search, two useful venues for establishing yourself in the e-Commerce environment. |
