On Saturday, PCWORLD.com reported that the “King of Spam,” Robert Soloway, has been officially dethroned. Soloway, 28, was arrested in 2007 on multiple charges of fraud and tax evasion. After pleading guilty to the charges this past Friday, he is now looking at a maximum jail time of 26 years. In addition to the jail time, Soloway will also undergo a lie detector test as he discloses information on his “financial assets.” Even though Soloway has reportedly been found guilty in a number of spam cases, this is the first time justice is effectively being served. The article referenced the 2005 case in which Microsoft won a $7.8 million judgment, but he had managed to “avoid paying fines.” That year alone from his spam projects, Soloway made a cool $300,000, and boasted in online discussion groups about his perceived immunity. Experts contend that it is “extremely rare for spammers to face criminal charges” and are hoping that this event will serve as a warning, and as a reminder to spammers, that there are serious consequences for such dangerous, destructive activity. Soloway is said to be sentenced on June 20th. |
