On June 8, 2010, Google introduced the completed version of its new and improved platform, Google Caffeine. Just as caffeine has sharpening skills for our mental alertness, Google Caffeine has illustrated an overall increase with search engine indexing speed. With sharper crawling skills and a 50% increase in fresh hits, the appropriately named new platform has taken the necessary steps towards building a foundation necessary for the growing amount of information on the internet.

Why the Sudden Jolt?

People want updates and the freshest content, and they want it now! Witnessing the web's growing amount of content and the need for instant gratification to obtain that content, Google decided to devise a platform that would compete with the speed of published information and real-time updates. As websites are more complex with videos, blogs, images and more, it is essential that Google is able to provide for its users a way to access the instantly updated content. As a result, Google Caffeine has shown subtle, yet significant changes to its complex algorithms.

Comparing the Old with the New

Initially, Google started indexing every four months, then once a month, followed by every night and now the search engine, as of June 2010, indexes immediately after web content is published. The speed of the search engine's web crawlers are mind blowing. According to a Google blog post on June 8, 2010, Carrie Grimes, a Google Software Engineer explained, "Caffeine takes up nearly 100 million gigabytes of storage in one database and adds new information at a rate of hundreds of thousands of gigabytes per day. You would need 625,000 of the largest iPods to store that much information; if these were stacked end-to-end they would go for more than 40 miles." Needless to say, the new version of Google will definitely enhance SERP's and also create new obstacles for SEO ranking.

What Does this mean for SEO?

Good news for organic link building, bad news for unnatural link building. Organic links have always been the most ideal way for sites to build web traffic and generate higher SEO rankings. Although paid links and other unnatural linking tactics are offered and did in fact yield results, it seems that Google Caffeine has begun the filtering process that will soon predominantly separate websites with quality content from those containing spam-filled unnatural content. The key to keeping up with Google Caffeine's new algorithm is maintaining unique and relative information that is constantly updated and fresh. It takes time to build a reputable website, but by keeping information flowing, you will be adding the necessary ingredients for success.

Google's caffeine platform is really amazing. With the continuous increase in the Web data, Google is still able to keep up and step up to the reputation for being the leader in search engines. Though many didn't like this(especially spammers and automated bots), it would seem that this is the only way Google thought to filter out which pages really are really worth in their rankings for certain keywords.

This new instant search feature is way more powerful than Google Suggest. With suggest you still had to choose a phrase you wanted, hit search and be taken to the results page to find what you are looking for. Now results are displayed dynamically as you type, and searchers may stop to find something that interests them mid – search.
