A New Look for Site Explorer

On Thursday, Priyank Garg posted in the Yahoo! Search Blog that in addition to new features implemented in its Site Explorer service, the site is getting an aesthetic makeover to deliver a visually streamlined experiences to users.

Site Explorer was launched a few years ago, and since then, like most online services, has undergone several updates to make room for fancy new features. Originally the program was geared towards the giving users a glimpse into the Yahoo! algorithm and web analytics which helped rank websites in their organic SERPs (search engine result pages).

But as the years went by, technological demands increased, and so Site Explored “moved beyond simply providing information to webmasters allowing them to tell us what to do with their site.” These demands were met by a variety of new capabilities, including “submitting feeds, deleting URLs or reporting spam.”

Garg writes that the feature which was “most successful” was Dynamic URL Rewriting. Yahoo! launched Dynamic URL Rewriting back in September 2007 and since then, has allowed thousands of webmasters to compose their own “rules for their websites” and “auto-rewrite an average of 25,000 URLs per rule.”

For now, the “new” Site Explorer is being hosted on a unique URL (http://siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com/new) for special testing and to give web developers the chance to tweak the features as they see fit. Overall, it houses a new center for statistics called the Site Summary page, revamped features for the Dynamic URL Rewriting.
